Chapter 20

Lacie

“They’re all so much the same, and so different at the same time,” I said to Nolan as we walked into the lobby of the Houston branch. We’d arrived yesterday after flying in from Florida, but true to his word, Nolan had arranged for us to only do our tour today.

The furniture and style of décor was familiar by now, as was the font on the signage and the navy uniform worn by the staff. What struck me, however, was that Florida was somehow more relaxed than D.C. even though the opulence and style were the same. It seemed like the hotels still managed to maintain the individuality of the city they were in, even if they were part of a chain.

Nolan’s eyebrows lifted, a grin spreading on his lips. Lips that I’ve kissed. Lips that left my own swollen and tingling. Lips that have been in other intimate—focus, Lacie.

“I’m impressed that you noticed it, actually. A lot of our guests have been to multiple locations, as have our staff, and very few of them have mentioned it.”

“So it’s done intentionally?”

He nodded. “No one likes staying in hotels that don’t give away where they are. You could be in London, Tokyo, or Paris and everything would feel exactly the same. While the chain does have uniformity, we still wanted the hotel to give an authentic feel of the place it was located.”

“I’ve never been to London, Paris, or Tokyo, but I think I know what you mean. It’s a good idea.”

“Thanks.” He grinned and, spotting Tristan walking up to us, held out his hand to greet the GM. “How are you, Tristan? I’m sorry I missed the meeting last week. Family emergency.”

“No problem.” Tristan released Nolan’s hand to shake mine. “Your protégé here handled the meeting like a pro.”

Pride glinted in Nolan’s eyes when he gave me a sidelong look. “I knew she could do it. She’s the best.”

“Right.” Tristan grinned and tipped his head. “I received your email about wanting to do the first formal tour of the progress today. That’s why I wasn’t here to meet you yesterday. I was needed elsewhere.”

“We wanted to take some time to look around by ourselves,” Nolan lied easily. To cover for me.

All because I’d told him I was a little sore. I still couldn’t believe he’d done that. It wasn’t like I was temporarily disabled. I just hadn’t been looking forward to walking around in heels all day long.

I’d tried to tell him not to worry about it on the plane before he’d sent the email, but he wouldn’t hear it. All things considered, he wasn’t treating me at all as dismissively or as nonchalantly as some of the men had in the stories I’d heard or read about losing one’s virginity.

He was attentive, caring, considerate, and had faced everything head on the next morning. Because of how honest and open he was about talking about it, there was no awkwardness between us. Which was great, given how we had to work together in close quarters every day.
